Start with the pile dimensions.
This is a dimensional estimate on a level base. Survey CSV and LandXML stockpile volumes are a separate feature still being built.
Choose the right shape
The custom-factor method multiplies length × width × height × factor. Its starting factor of 0.5 estimates half the bounding box. That can be useful for a rough pile, but it does not describe every shape.
A triangular windrow uses half the bounding box and assumes a constant section with flat ends. A rectangular pyramid uses one third. A circular cone uses π × diameter² × height ÷ 12. The diagram is a shape guide, not a scaled survey.
Worked example
A pile 30 ft long, 18 ft wide and 6 ft high, using a factor of 0.5, gives 30 × 18 × 6 × 0.5 = 1,620 ft³, or 60 loose yd³.
With an illustrative density of 1.5 short tons per yard, that is 90 short tons. A 12-yard truck needs five trips by volume. If its payload is 15 short tons, weight increases that to six trips.
A separate 10% allowance makes the planning quantity 66 yd³. At $20 per loose yard, the quantity line is $1,320 before taxes or other charges. The original dimensional estimate remains 60 yd³.
Do I add swell?
This tool treats the pile as material already loose. It does not add excavation swell again. For material still in the ground, start with the excavation calculator. Density depends on the actual material and moisture; enter an appropriate value rather than treating the example as a measurement.
When dimensions are not enough
Irregular piles, sloping yards and hidden hollows need a surveyed surface and a defensible base. Height here means height above the assumed level base. The tool does not infer buried ground or convert a photo into a volume.
