Worked example

100 × 50 ft at 1 ft average cut gives 5,000 ft² × 1 ft ÷ 27 = 185.185185 bank yd³. A separate 10% allowance adds 18.518519 yd³, giving a planning total of 203.703704 yd³.

What average depth cannot tell you

This is a planning prism. A signed average cannot separate cut and fill across uneven terrain; opposite volumes can cancel. Use surveyed existing and design surfaces for that comparison. Fill here is the required installed space, before project-specific compaction and ordering factors. Cut is bank volume, before swell.
